Backend engineering

Backend engineering that grows when your revenue does

We design, fix, and scale the server side of your product. Every decision comes with written reasoning, so you never pay for complexity your business doesn't need yet.

30 minutes with a senior engineer. You get a written summary of what we'd fix first, whether or not you work with us.

Sound familiar?

  • 01

Every release feels risky, so you ship less often than you'd like.

  • 02

The cloud bill grows faster than revenue, and nobody can explain which line item is to blame.

  • 03

The database was fast a year ago. Now some pages take seconds to load.

  • 04

Someone recommended microservices, and now four developers maintain twelve repositories.

  • 05

Only one engineer understands the old system, and they're always busy.

  • 06

Leadership wants AI features, but your backend can't give agents safe access to your data.

If two or more of these apply, the problems are probably connected. Backend issues rarely stay in one layer.

The cost of waiting

Waiting makes each of these more expensive

A slow query gets slower every month as data grows. An exposed secret stays exposed until someone finds it. A usage-based cloud bill rises with every new user, including the ones who never pay. The longer these problems sit, the more each fix costs.

Our approach

How we decide what you need

Most backend trouble we're called in to fix started as a reasonable decision made without enough context. A startup copies the architecture of a company a hundred times its size. A team picks a database because it's the one they know. A managed cloud service looks cheap until a campaign triples the traffic.

We start from your product: how much data you'll hold, how your traffic behaves, how big your team is, and what you can afford to maintain. The architecture follows from those answers.
Sometimes our advice is to build less than you planned. A well-structured monolith on a few self-hosted servers will carry many products a long way, and we'll tell you so even when a bigger project would pay us more.

Before and after

Before: Releases are manual and happen late at night
After: Every merge is tested and deployed by a pipeline, with one-step rollback
Before: Nobody knows why the system is built this way
After: Every major decision is recorded with its reasoning
Before: The cloud bill is a monthly surprise
After: Costs are forecast, capped, and monitored
Before: Knowledge lives in one engineer's head
After: The codebase follows one documented structure that anyone can learn
Before: AI features are a slide in a deck
After: Agents connect to your systems through MCP, with permissions you control

Process

How an engagement works

  1. 1

    Free review

A 30-minute call and a written summary of what we'd fix first.

  2. 2

    Assessment

We go through your code, database, infrastructure, and release process, and you get a written report with options and costs.

  3. 3

    Plan

Before anyone writes code, we agree on the architecture and the order of work.

  4. 4

    Build with your team

Every change is reviewed against the architecture, and every shortcut is recorded as technical debt.

  5. 5

    Handover

Documentation and runbooks your team, and your AI coding tools, can work from without us.

You can stop after step 2 and keep the report.

Why Edgerunners

What makes us different

01

Reasoning on paper

You get the options we weighed and why we chose one, so you can challenge any decision.

Cost is a design input

Build cost, maintenance cost, and monthly infrastructure cost are part of every recommendation.

03

You keep ownership

We work next to your team, and your people understand the system when we leave.

FAQ

Questions teams ask before hiring us

01Do we have to replace our developers?

No. Most of our work happens alongside your team. We can advise, build with them, or take over specific parts.

02Will you push us toward microservices or AWS?

Only if your product needs it. We often recommend a simpler setup, and the written reasoning lets you check our logic.

03Our system is half-built by another vendor. Can you pick it up?

Yes. We start with an assessment of what exists and fix the riskiest parts first.
